Sissy Mena at Gabe’s Oasis this Friday, May 7
I got an email from a fellow Iowan who is bringing his band to Gabe’s this Friday to play a show. The band is called Sissy Mena and they are a 3-piece out of Chicago, Il. Here is what some people are saying about their debut EP Young Girl
“Their music, as heard on their debut release Young Girl is much more
accessible than anything My Bloody Valentine did and — in the grand
scheme of modern post-rock — is very mainstream. I think many people
who don’t care for shoegaze, or don’t know what shoegaze even is,
could easily enjoy and fall in love with Sissy Mena.”
- Future Perfect Radio“As a whole, the EP remains undiluted, obvious in its distortion, and
sometimes gets lost in its journey between dream pop and noise rock.
But in this case, the scenic route is way more fun than asking for
directions.” - URChicago
Joining Sissy Mena will be The Post Mortems and Maylane. Tickets are $6 and the show is for ages 19+. Show starts at 9:30.

Last fall I took a journalism class taught by Iowa Public Radio’s Ben Kieffer. The class, Interviewing Across Media, focused on interviewing techniques and the important skills that are needed for getting the most out of an interview. It was a great class and it really helped me get over a lot of my personal anxieties associated with conducting a good interview.

I’m damn pumped to see Spoon…their albums are great and I’ve heard nothing but good things about their shows.
RRE is probably the band I’ve heard fluffed the most over the past year, whilst personally being completely ignorant of their music. Folk/bluegrass right? Have heard from several sources that they perform well.
Earl Greyhound friggin’ rocks, can’t remember who recommended them to me – but it is fun stuff. Bluesy/rock, great riffs.
I’m already more excited by these 3 bands than I was about the whole fest last year. Good job 80-35. Now show us the July 4 goods…and don’t blow it.

Yeah RRE is folksy/bluegrass. I have their “Elko” double live disc and I really like it. They are playing High Sierra in Cali on July 1-2 and then All Good in WV July 10. Looks like a few other bands are doing the same thing and I’m thinking they will need to stop through the midwest on their way between festivals….so fingers crossed 8035 will get some of those bands.
