Sissy Mena at Gabe’s Oasis this Friday, May 7

I got an email from a fellow Iowan who is bringing his band to Gabe’s this Friday to play a show.  The band is called Sissy Mena and they are a 3-piece out of Chicago, Il.  Here is what some people are saying about their debut EP Young Girl

“Their music, as heard on their debut release Young Girl is much more
accessible than anything My Bloody Valentine did and — in the grand
scheme of modern post-rock — is very mainstream. I think many people
who don’t care for shoegaze, or don’t know what shoegaze even is,
could easily enjoy and fall in love with Sissy Mena.”
    Future Perfect Radio

As a whole, the EP remains undiluted, obvious in its distortion, and
sometimes gets lost in its journey between dream pop and noise rock.
But in this case, the scenic route is way more fun than asking for
    directions.” - URChicago

Joining Sissy Mena will be The Post Mortems and Maylane.  Tickets are $6 and the show is for ages 19+.  Show starts at 9:30.

Photos from Deadman Flats & Cornmeal at Gabe’s Oasis; Two Many Banjos at The Yacht Club

I went to Gabe’s Oasis and The Yacht Club on Saturday and took some pictures of the bands playing that night for a project I am working on for school.  I first stopped at Gabe’s and took a few pictures of Deadman Flats and Cornmeal.

I really like these. You captured the essence of what makes “live” music. I especially liked how you captured the musicians’ facial expressions and it made me wish I’d had the chance to be there, too.

    Brews at Bread Garden

The weather was so nice last night that we decided to head downtown and find a patio to have some drinks on.  The problem is that for the first couple of weeks of spring, when the weather turns, if you go downtown past 4 p.m. you are most likely not going to find a good spot on a patio (especially on a Friday).  I wanted to have some good beers and maybe a little bit to eat, but I didn’t want to spend a lot of money.  I also didn’t want to have to wait forever to get a drink or have to listen to a bunch of college kids complain about the Cubs giving up a grand slam in the bottom of the 8th and losing to the Reds.

Java Blend at The Java House

Last fall I took a journalism class taught by Iowa Public Radio’s Ben Kieffer.  The class, Interviewing Across Media, focused on interviewing techniques and the important skills that are needed for getting the most out of an interview.  It was a great class and it really helped me get over a lot of my personal anxieties associated with conducting a good interview.

Every Friday, beginning at 2 p.m., Ben hosts “Java Blend,”  an hour-long show featuring local and national indie music artists.  The show takes place at The Java House in downtown Iowa City and is free and open to the public. The Java House also provides free coffee samples and snacks during the program.

    Masala

Sunday was my first day back in Iowa City since the holidays, and upon waking up I was faced with one of the toughest decision I have had to make in quite a while:  where should I go eat lunch?  It really didn’t take me long to come up with a place worthy enough to fill the void left by my nearly month long hiatus from Iowa City.

    A Bluebird Breakfast

Last week we decided to stretch out our money a little bit and go out for breakfast and lunch instead of just going out to dinner.  We decided to go to back to Bluebird Diner because I was craving their biscuits and gravy.  Luckily we got there at a good time and got right in.  Usually it is pretty busy, especially on a Sunday morning, but somehow we were even lucky enough to find a parking spot without driving in circles for ten minutes.

The inside of the Bluebird is nice and open, yet it still feels pretty cozy inside even with all of those crazy mirrors.  But its not a bad crazy, they are actually pretty cool and some of them are really BIG!  I also like the boomerang designs on the tables.

That breakfast looks so good! I have only been to the Bluebird Diner for lunch but it was delicious (I had the smoked chicken salad). I would definitely like to try it out for breakfast sometime!

Bluebird does a good job. I wish they did breakfast all day. The burgers are good too.
