Takanami

I know, I know. It’s been quite a while since my last post. School already has me freaking out and it is only the second week of the semester.

So I figured in this short time between classes I should talk about the last place I checked out in downtown IC. I was having my bi-weekly craving for sushi and decided to give Takanami a try. Takanami, or 高波 in Japonés, was actually the name of a Japanese type A destroyer used by the Imperial Japanese Navy during WWII. Takanami translates to “pearly waves” or “high wave”- though I am not really sure because I dropped my Japanese language class a few days after it started. Anyways, on to the food.

The first thing you will notice inside of Takanami is the large saltwater tank. I was thinking about how sweet it would be to sit next to it, but unfortunately, I was seated next to the front windows in the most cramped table imaginable. To my left, a large piece of wood, to my right, some guy flicking his cigarette onto the hood of someone’s car (he took it off, don’t worry).  No nice view of the small fish in the large tank and no view of the chefs(?) using blowtorches on the sushi rolls.

This leads me to mention something that really grinds my effing gears. I hate when I go to a restaurant and am seated in the front window (I’m looking at you too Brown Bottle). I’m coming to your restaurant to spend some money and eat some food. Don’t use me as your human advertisement and park me in the window so people walking outside will think you are busy, cause you aren’t.

Anyways, the prices are similar to other local sushi places, about $4-5 for a basic roll, and $11-13 for a ‘specialty’ roll. The Nigiri runs from $3-5. A few Blue Moons and an overpriced martini later, our order came out and we started eating. I wouldn’t say that the rolls were anything special. They were comparable to most other sushi places in town. Nothing special. Especially not for a $60 ticket.

I think next time I will have to just go to Oyama like everyone has been telling me.
