Sissy Mena at Gabe’s Oasis this Friday, May 7
I got an email from a fellow Iowan who is bringing his band to Gabe’s this Friday to play a show. The band is called Sissy Mena and they are a 3-piece out of Chicago, Il. Here is what some people are saying about their debut EP Young Girl
“Their music, as heard on their debut release Young Girl is much more
accessible than anything My Bloody Valentine did and — in the grand
scheme of modern post-rock — is very mainstream. I think many people
who don’t care for shoegaze, or don’t know what shoegaze even is,
could easily enjoy and fall in love with Sissy Mena.”
- Future Perfect Radio“As a whole, the EP remains undiluted, obvious in its distortion, and
sometimes gets lost in its journey between dream pop and noise rock.
But in this case, the scenic route is way more fun than asking for
directions.” - URChicagoJoining Sissy Mena will be The Post Mortems and Maylane. Tickets are $6 and the show is for ages 19+. Show starts at 9:30.

Initial 80/35 2010 lineup released today
Got the e-mail this morning with the initial list of bands who will be playing 80/35 this July 4 weekend. I understand why they are announcing bands via newsletter, rather than a live press conference like they did last year. I think it is in part to sequester the nay-sayers from the announcements, and in part to keep 80/35 on people’s minds as more bands are released every Monday.

Bands playing July 3 / Bands playing July 4
So the first bands announced were Spoon, Slightly Stoopid, Earl Greyhound, Modern Day Satire, and Railroad Earth. Yesterday I wrote that I hope some of the bands are groups that I haven’t seen before, and I do get that with the musicians announced so far. I think the whole point of a music festival is to expand your musical horizon and just have some fun with friends.

Keep your fingers crossed – 80/35 2010 lineup announcement tomorrow
Tomorrow, the Greater Des Moines Music Coalition will announce the 2010 lineup for the 80/35 music festival. Just like last year, I am really excited to see who they were able to get to come play in Des Moines over the 4th of July weekend. Hopefully unlike last year, I won’t be disappointed with the bands coming to play.

Now, I do realize that putting on a concert, let alone a music festival, is a monumental task, especially when you are trying to lure big name bands to Des Moines, Iowa. Also, you have to factor in different age groups, generations, genres, etc. to make everyone happy. So I understand making everyone happy is damn near impossible. But either way, I think most people could agree that the lineup last year was kinda lame. After I watched the initial announcement on-line, the first thing that came to mind was the South Park episode when they make fun of Des Moines for being three years behind the rest of the country, or in last years case, three years behind every other festival.

Photos from Deadman Flats & Cornmeal at Gabe’s Oasis; Two Many Banjos at The Yacht Club
I went to Gabe’s Oasis and The Yacht Club on Saturday and took some pictures of the bands playing that night for a project I am working on for school. I first stopped at Gabe’s and took a few pictures of Deadman Flats and Cornmeal.

I really like these. You captured the essence of what makes “live” music. I especially liked how you captured the musicians’ facial expressions and it made me wish I’d had the chance to be there, too.

Emmit-Nershi Band at The Picador this Friday!!!
If you are a fan of bluegrass, the Emmit-Nershi Band is a must see. These guys have been playing great music for many years, and they are continuing that tradition with The Emmit-Nershi Band this Friday at the Picador. Frontmen Bill Nershi and Drew Emmit both have played stadiums and festivals across the country for quite awhile. Nershi played in the now dismembered String Cheese Incident, a band known for extensive improvisational jams in genres ranging from bluegrass to funk. Emmit was a mandolin player for Leftover Salmon, another band known for their unique country/bluegrass sound. Here is the best video I could find on the Emmit-Nershi Band on Youtube. Notice at about 3:30 into the video, Nershi appears to be wearing an Englert Theater t-shirt!
Tickets are ONLY $12, which is totally worth it to see a band with musicians that have played to capacity at some of the biggest venues across the country. I would easily pay twice that to see this talented band. Doors open at 9 p.m. and the show is for those 19 and up.

I’m damn pumped to see Spoon…their albums are great and I’ve heard nothing but good things about their shows.
RRE is probably the band I’ve heard fluffed the most over the past year, whilst personally being completely ignorant of their music. Folk/bluegrass right? Have heard from several sources that they perform well.
Earl Greyhound friggin’ rocks, can’t remember who recommended them to me – but it is fun stuff. Bluesy/rock, great riffs.
I’m already more excited by these 3 bands than I was about the whole fest last year. Good job 80-35. Now show us the July 4 goods…and don’t blow it.

Yeah RRE is folksy/bluegrass. I have their “Elko” double live disc and I really like it. They are playing High Sierra in Cali on July 1-2 and then All Good in WV July 10. Looks like a few other bands are doing the same thing and I’m thinking they will need to stop through the midwest on their way between festivals….so fingers crossed 8035 will get some of those bands.
