Takanami

I know, I know. It’s been quite a while since my last post. School already has me freaking out and it is only the second week of the semester.

So I figured in this short time between classes I should talk about the last place I checked out in downtown IC. I was having my bi-weekly craving for sushi and decided to give Takanami a try. Takanami, or 高波 in Japonés, was actually the name of a Japanese type A destroyer used by the Imperial Japanese Navy during WWII. Takanami translates to “pearly waves” or “high wave”- though I am not really sure because I dropped my Japanese language class a few days after it started. Anyways, on to the food.

Blog’s Blog: Great video(s) of Iowa City resident(’s photography)

I recently came across a great set of videos on MediaStorm featuring the work of photojournalist and Iowa City resident Danny Wilcox Frazier.

I really connected with a lot of the things he had to say about Iowa in the videos, particularly his “love-hate” relationship with the state. At times, I find myself totally content living in Iowa for the rest of my life, then I take a trip anywhere that isn’t Iowa (excluding Nebraska) and start questioning myself as to why the hell I still live here. I guess that is the easiest way for me to put it.

Java Blend at The Java House

Last fall I took a journalism class taught by Iowa Public Radio’s Ben Kieffer.  The class, Interviewing Across Media, focused on interviewing techniques and the important skills that are needed for getting the most out of an interview.  It was a great class and it really helped me get over a lot of my personal anxieties associated with conducting a good interview.

Every Friday, beginning at 2 p.m., Ben hosts “Java Blend,”  an hour-long show featuring local and national indie music artists.  The show takes place at The Java House in downtown Iowa City and is free and open to the public. The Java House also provides free coffee samples and snacks during the program.

Masala

Sunday was my first day back in Iowa City since the holidays, and upon waking up I was faced with one of the toughest decision I have had to make in quite a while:  where should I go eat lunch?  It really didn’t take me long to come up with a place worthy enough to fill the void left by my nearly month long hiatus from Iowa City.

Pizza and Pints at Wig and Pen

We decided to celebrate the end of my semester by going out to for dinner and some drinks.  Originally we planned on going to Cactus, a mexican restaurant that we heard was worth trying out.  On our way there, we mad a last minute decision to go to Wig and Pen instead.  That turned out to be a really good decision.

I had been to Wig and Pen once before to have a few early morning drinks before a basketball game.  It was a while ago and don’t remember anything except that it was packed.  The same could be said when we went there last Tuesday.  I was surprised to see every table in the place filled up.  We put our name down and were told that it was about a 20 minute wait.  Luckily, there happened to be a few seats at the bar.  I got a New Castle and Rachel got her favorite, amaretto and diet.

A Bluebird Breakfast

Last week we decided to stretch out our money a little bit and go out for breakfast and lunch instead of just going out to dinner.  We decided to go to back to Bluebird Diner because I was craving their biscuits and gravy.  Luckily we got there at a good time and got right in.  Usually it is pretty busy, especially on a Sunday morning, but somehow we were even lucky enough to find a parking spot without driving in circles for ten minutes.

The inside of the Bluebird is nice and open, yet it still feels pretty cozy inside even with all of those crazy mirrors.  But its not a bad crazy, they are actually pretty cool and some of them are really BIG!  I also like the boomerang designs on the tables.
